At Wellist, we are always so excited to be able to share information about and take part of the amazing fundraising and awareness events that are happening in Boston, which is why we are particularly eager to be able to post about the LUNGevity Foundation's newest event!
It is time once again for the Breathe Deep Boston 5K Walk to End Lung Cancer, hosted by LUNGevity Foundation. On October 31st, Breathe Deep Boston will be alive and ready for action in its 10th year of walking to raise awareness and funds for lung cancer. It all started when two lung cancer survivors, the late Rich Kaufman and the late Geri Norris, brought together a small group of family, friends, and volunteers to start the first walk in Boston in 2006. Since then, Breathe Deep Boston has gained thousands of supporters and has successfully raised over $1.5 million for lung cancer.
This year, the walk will take place at DCR's Carson Beach in South Boston, and will host several families, friends, and survivors affected by lung cancer. Within this community of hope, the Breathe Deep Boston event hopes to raise a goal of $230,000 towards lung cancer research, education, and support this year. Breathe Deep Boston is proud to honor Casella Resource Solutions for their continued sponsorship this year. In addition, the event is sponsored by Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, BIND Therapeutics, Lahey Health Shared Services, Massachusetts General Hospital, and the Conquer Cancer Coalition of Massachusetts. Breathe Deep Boston will feature an “Honor Wall” where participants can write messages to loved ones affected by lung cancer, as well as a silent auction. In addition, the course is wheelchair and stroller-friendly, so the entire family can join.
Breathe Deep Boston is one of several “Breathe Deep” events, all hosted by LUNGevity Foundation. LUNGevity Foundation is the largest private funder in the United States for lung cancer research, education, awareness, and support. As a nonprofit, LUNGevity focuses on connecting survivors, patients, and those affected by lung cancer with resources to help better their lives and their health. LUNGevity’s vision is to see a world where no one dies of lung cancer. With this goal in mind, LUNGevity actively chooses to fund research and education that focuses on early detection and treatment of lung cancer, so that the public can see improvements in survival rates and quality of life post-diagnosis. To date, LUNGevity has funded 115 research projects at 58 institutions in 23 states. Some of LUNGevity’s other programs include online peer-to-peer support, in-person survivorship programs, and more than 80 grassroots awareness and fundraising events held across the country.
Because of the nature of lung cancer, which currently has a 17 percent five-year survival rate, there is always more work to be done in getting closer to a world without death of lung cancer. The Breathe Deep Boston 5K Walk is meant to help LUNGevity come closer to that goal. With your help and support, we can see that advances in lung cancer are possible. At the end of the day, LUNGevity Foundation believes firmly that with our efforts, there is hope for all those affected by this disease.
